The Mikado
March 22, 2019 at 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
For their March 2019 tour, Somerset Opera present the timeless Gilbert and Sullivan classic, The Mikado or, The Town of Titipu. This timeless and much-loved classic first premiered at London’s Savoy Theatre in 1885 and has held the stage constantly ever since.
Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado of Japan, has fled his father’s palace when commanded to marry Katisha, an elderly lady of his father’s court. Disguised as “a second trombone” he joins the Titipu Town Band, where he first encounters and falls in love with the beautiful Yum-Yum, the ward of Ko-Ko, the town tailor to whom she is, unfortunately, betrothed. Ko-Ko however, finds himself condemned to death for flirting (strictly prohibited by the Mikado’s law). To counteract this, he is raised to the rank of Lord High Executioner, the townspeople arguing that as Ko-Ko is next in line to be beheaded no one else can be unless he executes himself. Eventually, all ends happily, but not until the various characters have extracted themselves from numerous difficult situations along the way.
