Blackdowns Early Music Projects – Newe Vialles – Good Againe

May 20, 2021 at 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

£7.50 – £15

At last! Real Live Music…
The BEMP Third Thursday recital series opens on May 20th in All Saints’ Church, Culmstock
First up will be Newe Vialles, who are delighted to be returning to Culmstock for a recital of characterful and quirky music from 17th century England. The programme features sumptuous lyra viol music by the soldier turned composer Tobias Hume, swift divisions by the master of English viol-playing Christopher Simpson, and delicate dance duos by John Jenkins, whose career spanned almost the whole of the century, from the time of Charles I until well into the Restoration. We are delighted that this time, Catherine Bass will join us for a set of lute and continuo songs, and we will end the recital with a sonata by Benjamin Hely, a little-known English composer and violist from the end of the century, whose music shows definite hints of the high baroque. This will be our first public performance since the beginning of the pandemic and we hope that, as Hume titles one of his pieces, things will soon indeed be “good againe”.
