SUMMARY:St John the Evangelist\, Park Street\, Taunton – Lunchtime Concert
DESCRIPTION:‘A Celebration of Somerset Day’.   \nGibby Swaine\, Sue Watts and The Stoggy Men along with Tom Mayberry (CE of Heritage SW). \nThe history and heritage of Somerset will be celebrated in a specially extended hour long concert. Gibby Swaine and Sue Watts have been making music together for many years and have invited The Stoggy Men\, from Stogumber\, to join in a programme that will explore the wealth of traditional Somerset music. There might even be some surprise visitors but to find out who they are you will have to be there. Please save the date and come and enjoy the fun. \nDoors open at 12 noon and cold drinks will be served before the start of the concert. \nRetiring collection in aid of Halseway Manor\, National Centre for Folk Arts\, and St John’s Church.

SUMMARY:Russian Gala Concert; Sergei Kosov – Balalaika\, Iryna Ilaytska – Mezzo Soprano\, Yulia Nortbridge – Violin\, Ekaterina Shetliffe – Piano.
DESCRIPTION:The performers of this concert are all graduates of leading Russian music colleges who have won prizes and awards for their performances and commitment to music.  They have been entertaining audiences in The Midlands and Devon for several years but it will be the first time they have performed together in Taunton. \nSergei Kosov\, the balalaika player will be travelling from Russia especially for the group’s February tour.  During his performing career he has worked with many traditional folk orchestras in Russia\, USA and Germany.  Ukranian born\, Iryna Ilnystska established her operatic career first in Kiev but after moving to England she has played various solo roles including taking part in ?The Magic Flute’ with Somerset Opera.  Yulia Northridge is based in Derbyshire and has regularly performed as solo violinist with the Derby and Loughborough Concert Orchestras.  Kate Shetliffe regularly gives solo performances and as accompanist for choirs\, vocalists and instrumentalists at various venues including Dartington Space\, Exeter Cathedral and The Cynet Thetre. \nTheir program will include music by Tchaikovsky\, Shostakovich and Siviridov\, whose delightful music has yet to be discovered by many people in Western Europe.  This will be an excellent opportunity to learn more of Sivirodov\, who died only  20 years ago\, but drew inspiration from the great Russian composers and from the  country’s folk music. \nAll the performers love the opportunity to portray the music heritage of their origins and are delighted at the chance to entertain a new audience while at the same time help to raise funds for the roof repairs at St John’s Church\, which have recently been finished but the payment has yet to be completed.

SUMMARY:The Phoenix Singers – The Canticle of Brother Sun
DESCRIPTION:The Phoenix Singers \nSaturday 19th March 2016\, St John the Evangelist Church\, Taunton \nTHE CANTICLE OF BROTHER SUN \nMusic inspired by the words of prayers and hymns \nThe Phoenix Singers under their music director Andrew Maddocks\, will be performing an evening of sacred music in St John’s Church\, Taunton on Saturday 19th March at 7.30pm. \nThe concert is a programme of music inspired by the words of prayers and hymns.  Saint Francis of Assisi believed that nature itself was the mirror of God and in his ‘Canticle of the Creatures’ he mentions Brother Sun and Sister Moon.  The Phoenix Singers will sing a setting of these canticle words by Grayston Ives.  This piece became the inspiration for an evening of choral music in which composers such as John Rutter\, Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten feature. \nThe programme includes the 8th century words of Be thou my vision heard as a hymn and then in a very lyrical setting by Bob Chilcott.  F.S. Pierpoint’s words of For the beauty of the earth will be sung as a hymn to an adapted folk melody\, followed by John Rutter’s very famous choral setting of the same words.  John Bunyan’s words for He who would valiant be comes as a hymn in an arrangement of an English folk tune by Vaughan Williams\, followed by his setting of words from Pilgrim’s Progress\, Valiant-for-Truth.   \nEd Jenkins\, Music Director at Queen’s College\, Taunton will accompany the choir. \nFurther details can be found on the choir’s website\, whilst tickets priced £12 can be purchased online at www.thephoenixsingers.co.uk\, at the Taunton Visitor Centre or by phoning 01823 432704.
