DESCRIPTION:The Wilbye Quartet\nFour voices got together during Covid restrictions and have continued singing since then\, performing music both sacred and secular in the South West. \nOur programme for Spring 2023 is a survey of English Song spanning seven centuries\, from Greensleeves and the first known round\, through the Renaissance period to the late 19th – early 20th century. \nThe richness and scope of English song repertoire through the centuries presents a huge problem for the Quartet: how to limit the programme to under an hour? The result of many hours of trying out pieces\, we have cherry-picked some of the best known and loved songs through the ages\, as well as a few of our personal favourites. \nThough the list can’t be comprehensive we have tried to present a thumbnail sketch\, with music by Henry VIII\, Byrd\, Dowland\, Wilbye\, Tallis and Purcell to Elgar\, Finzi\, and Vaughan Williams and others. \nDrinks will be available before the concert. \nThere will be a retiring collection in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice and St John’s Church. \nThis event has been sponsored by Invest SW

The founder and benefactor\, The Rev’d Jeremiah Smith dedicated much of his efforts to the education of children so it is apt that this concert will be especially children\, but for all ages to enjoy.. \nThe Skylarks will return to St John’s as a wind quintet\, presenting a programme featuring Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel with narration\, the concert includes other tuneful classics from Bizet’s Jeaux d’enfants\, Warlock’s Capriol Suite and other musical gems. \nThe Skylark Quintet\nThe Skylarks come from the far corners of the world and have enjoyed careers spanning five continents. SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Comemmoration
DESCRIPTION:The Taunton’s Annual Commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day will again take place at St John’s Church. This year’s theme is “Ordinary People”. The County Council Choir\, “Canticle”\, and students from Queen’s College will be making musical contributions and Chief Executive of Heritage SW\, Tom Mayberry will be speaking about local people who made a difference. \nThis event is organised by a small collection of community representatives and Somerset County Council. It’s purpose is to remember acts of genocide and their victims including the Holocaust. It is a civic and secular event with people of all faiths and none welcome. The programme will include music and the lighting of candles. \nThe church will be open till 4pm following the commemoration for those wishing to view a display or sign the book of commitment.

The concert will also include the sublime Requiem by Herbert Howells\, and Three Latin Motets by C. V. Stanford.

DESCRIPTION:David Davies will give a 45 minute recital on the church’s fine Willis organ. The afternoon will be rounded of with the serving of Tea and Cakes.\nDavid Davies is Organist of Buckfast Abbey and Organist at the University of Exeter. He trained as an organist\, pianist and conductor at Eton College\, Magdalen College\, Oxford\, and the Institute of Sacred Music\, Yale University. David has held church and cathedral appointments both in the USA and the UK\, most recently as Assistant Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral and Sub-Organist and Director of the Girls’ Choir at Guildford Cathedral.\nHe has given concerts across the USA\, Japan\, South Africa and in several European countries. DESCRIPTION:This 40 strong choir\, comprised of the combined choirs of St Alban’s School and St Columba’s College are touring South West England at the beginning of July. We are most excited they have chosen to include St John’s Church in their itinerary and eagerly await to hear the their performance which will include “Jazz Missa Brevis” by Will Todd\,. The acoustics and setting of St John’s Church will offer an excellent venue for these young people to give their only performance in Taunton.\nLike the regular Friday Lunchtime Concerts\, the doors will open at 12.00pm and the performance will start at 12.45pm. You are welcome to bring your sandwiches and cold drinks will be available. \nThe Choir have nominated the Mayor’s Charity which this year is for Cancer Research Uk to share the retiring collection with St John’s Church.

In the intervening months we have appointed a new Music Director\, Elinor Cooper\, who has patiently waited to work with us all. We resumed full rehearsal mode this Autumn and are greatly looking forward to sharing live music with you again.\nIn this programme we return with poignant festival anthems including two commissioned by the Rev Walter Hussey\, a great supporter of the arts\, who invited Benjamin Britten and Gerald Finzi to write anthems for his church. We shall also be singing some of Henry Purcell and William Byrd’s best loved anthems\, finishing the evening with one of the most uplifting anthems of all\, Hubert Parry’s I was Glad.

DESCRIPTION:Trio Exe invite you on a musical journey back to Russia in the 1890s. A period when Russian music was full of romantic melodies and gorgeous harmonies\, with native composers respected and revered across Europe and a thriving cultural scene.\nThe main work in our programme is the Piano Trio No. 1 by Anton Arensky. Possibly not a name you have come across\, and we are delighted to bring you this sumptuous music if it is your first introduction to the composer. Arensky specialised in composing chamber music and was devoted to the music of Tchaikovsky\, even using some of Tchaikovsky’s melodies in his own works. This Trio is a whirlwind of contrasting moods\, from the dramatic to the cheerful\, both memorable and uplifting and guaranteed to brighten your day!\nThey will also play some arrangements of pieces from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker.

DESCRIPTION:Live performances at Lunchtime will hopefully be resuming in June and are planned to continue until November with a performance on the second Friday of each month. It is also hoped that most concerts will be recorded\, so those who are unable to attend in person will be able to watch later on You Tube. \nKevin Hurst and Jonathan Delbridge join forces to provide a concert of music for clarinet and organ\, celebrating music from the baroque and classical periods. Programme to include Ave Maria by Bach/Gounod\, Air from Suite in D by J S Bach and a Church Sonata by Mozart. \nDoors will open at 12.00pm and the concert will start at 12.45pm. In accordance with Covid regulations\, it will necessary to book your seat by calling 01823 335543 and leaving name and contact number. It is regretted that it will not be possible to serve the usual cold drinks\, but people are welcome to bring their own refreshments. \nThere will be a retiring collection in aid of Somerset Community Foundation\, and St John’s Church for the maintenance of the Church
