SUMMARY:Wellington Choral Society – Jenkins –  The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:A performance of this hugely popular work by Wellington Choral Society\, conducted by Laurence Blyth \nOn Saturday 28 March 2020\, Wellington Choral Society  will be singing ‘The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace’ conducted by Laurence Blyth. This mass was composed by the Welsh composer\, Karl Jenkins and was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium celebrations\, to mark the museum’s move from London to Leeds\, and it was dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis.  It is essentially an anti-war piece and is based on the Catholic Mass\, which Jenkins combines with other sources\, principally the 15th-century folk song “L’homme armé” in the first and last movements. It was written for  chorus with soloists and a symphonic orchestra. It is a very moving work and the haunting Benedictus that captivates listeners to the greatest extent. \nWe will also be singing Elgar’s ‘Great is the Lord’ and Vaughan Williams ‘ Five Mystical Songs’

SUMMARY:Collegium Singers – Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Collegium Singers enters its 25th year as a chamber choir singing a work which has long been associated with much larger choral forces. \nEin Deutsches Requiem is most often performed with full orchestra\, however at the request of his publisher\, Brahms created a version of the score to be made available for chamber performance with piano accompaniment (four hands one piano). This version of the work travelled to England for its British debut at a private residence in London\, presented in English and without the Fifth Movement. \nBrahms himself conducted around 30 singers and two pianists at that event.  The English translation used then has been lost\, so we shall be singing the original German texts drawn from verses of the Lutheran Bible. \nThe choir will be led by Tomos Watkins who has recently graduated with distinction from his postgraduate conductors’ programme and will be joined by two talented young opera students\, Freya Holliman and Jack Bowtell\, from Cardiff to perform the Soprano and Baritone solos.  The pianists will be our well-known local musicians\, Alison Pink and Karen Paul. \nThe choir will also sing the Stabat Mater by Giuseppe Verdi. \nTickets:-  Adults £15\, Students £9\, Under 12’s free \nTickets on line through choir web site or from  Taunton Visitor Centre\, Market House\, Fore Street\, Taunton\, Somerset\, TA1 1JD \nTel: 01823-340470  Open Monday – Saturday 9.30 am to 4.30 pm

SUMMARY:Iberian Treasury: Renaissance music from Spain and Portugal
DESCRIPTION:Over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend Blackdowns Early Music Projects are promoting two concerts\, this is the second second concert\, starting at 6pm on Monday May 7th in the Church of St John the Baptist\, Wellington TA21 8QY.  BEMP singers under their principal Musical Director\, JanJoost van Elburg\, will present a programme of music from Spain and Portugal.  This Iberian Treasury will contain works by Spanish and Portuguese composers who span the renaissance years starting with the work of the Spaniard Cristobal Morales\, born in 1500\, right up to that of the Portuguese João Rodrigues Esteves who died in 1751.  In between these two important musicians came others\, such as Francisco Guerrero\,  Tomas Luis de Victoria\,  Juan Esquivel\, Duarte Lobo and Manuel Cardoso all of whom thoroughly deserve their places in the Treasury.  Newe Vialles and Martin Perkins (organ) will accompany the singers.  Tickets are available now from Taunton Visitor Centre ( £15 full price\, £8 for students and under 12s free)  \nTickets for both concerts are available from www.blackdownsearlymusic.co.uk\, Taunton Visitor Centre\, Ticketsource and also at the door.   For more information please call 01884 849172.

DESCRIPTION:BEMP is offering two concerts of early to mid C17th century German Baroque music over the Bank Holiday weekend\,  encompassing two ends of the musical spectrum in scale. \nEnthusiasts of solo instrumental music will be delighted by the first event\,  a harpsichord recital entitled PRELUDES\, PARTITAS & GROUNDS to be given internationally renowned Steven Devine\, whose busy career sees him performing as harpsichordist and director\, working with some of today’s finest musicians.  His programme includes works by composers spanning the C17th from Froberger to Bach\, including Buxtehude and Pachelbel on the way… and a World Premiere of a new piece written for Steven by Peter McCarthy\, who will be in the audience! \nThe recital will be of about one hour duration.

DESCRIPTION:JanJoost van Elburg will direct choral music retrieved from the archives of the Monasterio de la Encarnacion and Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. This music has rarely been performed in recent times\, yet it represents a large body of work by musicians working throughout the 17th century and even later. They were influenced by the legacy of the great Tomas Luis de Victoria\, who had lived in Descalzas Reales for many years before his death in 1611. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nCelebrate the festive season with Wellington Choral Society’s performance of J S Bach’s choral masterwork\, The Christmas Oratorio\, a wonderful exploration of the nativity which features some of Bach’s most spectacular orchestration. \nThe event takes place at 7-30 pm on Saturday November 26th at St John’s Church\, Wellington. Ticket prices are £12\, those under 18 free. Tickets are available on line at www.wellingtonchoralsociety.org.uk; from Nurtured by Nature\, South Street\, Wellington; Taunton Visitor Centre\, Market House\, Taunton; Wellington Community Offices; WCS members or on the Door. \nThe Christmas Oratorio was intended for performance in church during six separate days over the festive season. This choral masterpiece was written for the Christmas of 1734 and incorporates music from earlier compositions. It includes three cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 in praise of royalty or notable local figures. The orchestration demonstrates Bach’s most astonishing technical brilliance\, with glorious harmonies\, creating a magnificent rich sound. \nThe author of the original German text is unknown\, although a likely collaborator with Bach himself was Christian Friedrich Henri. The society will be singing Parts 1\,2\, 3 and 6 of the work in English\, using the translation and adaption by Reverend J. Troutbeck. \nConductor for the performance will be Wellington Choral Society’s Musical Director- Laurence Blyth. WCS and soloists accompanied by The Wellington Sinfonia. \n
