The programme includes \nMass in D by Dvorak\nRequiem by Matthew Coleridge\nLove Divine by Howard Goodall\nPeace I leave with you by Amy Beech \nThis is a new programme of music for the Society and we are very excited to be singing such moving and melodic pieces. Matthew Coleridge’s Requiem was first published in 2016 in response to becoming a father and is uplifting and life affirming. The Dvorak Mass in D includes gentle tunes as well as dynamic movements. We do hope new singers will come and join us to sing this wonderful music. We rehearse at 7.30pm on Wednesdays at Wellington Prep School Hall. DESCRIPTION:Four hundred years after the death of William Byrd\, we still delight in singing a huge number of his works. For him music was an entire language\, telling of the religious changes through his lifetime as well as describing the lighter side of life. \n1623 saw the passing of two other notable composers: \nThomas Weelkes\, a prolific composer and organist at Winchester and then Chichester Cathedral\, by all accounts a somewhat controversial fellow in Church circles. \nDanish composer Mogens Pedersøn was the most highly regarded musician in the court of Christian IV. He studied extensively in Italy and accompanied the entourage of Anne of Denmark when she came to England to marry James I of England and VI of Scotland\, possibly meeting William Byrd during his several years in London.

DESCRIPTION:Blackdowns Early Music Projects has been silent since November 2019\, but at last\, we are able to get back together and sing!\nWe are absolutely delighted to announce that we shall be working with The Musical & Amicable Society under their Director Martin Perkins who will lead from the keyboard\, to bring a programme of very rarely heard choral and instrumental baroque music from Bologna\, all composed by musicians associated with the Basilica of San Petronio.\nBologna was an active music centre\, alongside those in Florence and Venice and there is much to enjoy in this music. Martin has transcribed most of the pieces himself during the course of his own studies and we singers are really looking forward to delving into this repertoire\, with plenty of double choir\, florid violin and gamba accompaniments.\nNone of the composers is particularly well known as yet\, please allow us to introduce you to some new old music!

SUMMARY:Wellington Choral Society – Jenkins –  The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:A performance of this hugely popular work by Wellington Choral Society\, conducted by Laurence Blyth \nOn Saturday 28 March 2020\, Wellington Choral Society  will be singing ‘The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace’ conducted by Laurence Blyth. This mass was composed by the Welsh composer\, Karl Jenkins and was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium celebrations\, to mark the museum’s move from London to Leeds\, and it was dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis.  It is essentially an anti-war piece and is based on the Catholic Mass\, which Jenkins combines with other sources\, principally the 15th-century folk song “L’homme armé” in the first and last movements. It was written for  chorus with soloists and a symphonic orchestra. It is a very moving work and the haunting Benedictus that captivates listeners to the greatest extent. \nWe will also be singing Elgar’s ‘Great is the Lord’ and Vaughan Williams ‘ Five Mystical Songs’

His story takes place in the Berkshire Downs where he lived\, and legend has it that St George fought a dragon.
