DESCRIPTION:This will be the debut concert for this newly founded Trombone Quartet\, Taunton Sliders.  It will make a stirring start for the 2024 series of St John’s\nLunchtime Concerts.\,\nChristian Hopwood\, Brian Pearson\, Kevin Rigg and Stewart Stunell are four trombone players from the Taunton area who make up the trombone section of the Somerset County Orchestra. Between them they have almost 200 years of playing experience and have played in venues around the UK and European countries including Finland\, Germany\, Holland\, Belgium\, Luxembourg\, The Czech Republic\, Eire\, France and Italy. Their music ranges from 16th to 21st centuries and range from classical to religious and on to Jazz and modern.\nRetiring collection in aid of Love Musgrove\, Musgrove League of Friends and St John’s Church.

SUMMARY:Musical Meditations for Lent
DESCRIPTION:The Wilbye Quartet have waited a long time to have the opportunity to present their programme designed to prepare us for Lent.  Their programme is to include Chorales from Bach St Matthew Passion and works by Victoria\, Byrd\, Morley\, Tchaikovsky and Bruckner.   \nThe four voices formed into The Wilbye Quartet during Covid restrictions when larger numbers were unable to meet.  They enjoyed themselves so much that they have continued to rehearse  and enjoy performing music both sacred and secular in the South West. \nJane Cresswell – soprano\nLynn Carter – alto\nRoger Bates – tenor\nSimon Davies – bass \nAll are welcome to attend this concert.  Entry will be free but there will be a retiring collection for people to show their appreciation. \nTea and Cakes will be served after the performance.

DESCRIPTION:The Wilbye Quartet\nFour voices got together during Covid restrictions and have continued singing since then\, performing music both sacred and secular in the South West. \nOur programme for Spring 2023 is a survey of English Song spanning seven centuries\, from Greensleeves and the first known round\, through the Renaissance period to the late 19th – early 20th century. \nThe richness and scope of English song repertoire through the centuries presents a huge problem for the Quartet: how to limit the programme to under an hour? DESCRIPTION:The Taunton’s Annual Commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day will again take place at St John’s Church. This year’s theme is “Ordinary People”. The County Council Choir\, “Canticle”\, and students from Queen’s College will be making musical contributions and Chief Executive of Heritage SW\, Tom Mayberry will be speaking about local people who made a difference. \nThis event is organised by a small collection of community representatives and Somerset County Council. It’s purpose is to remember acts of genocide and their victims including the Holocaust. It is a civic and secular event with people of all faiths and none welcome. The programme will include music and the lighting of candles. \nThe church will be open till 4pm following the commemoration for those wishing to view a display or sign the book of commitment.
