There is also an unusual chance to hear Vaughan Williams’ iconic masterpiece The Lark Ascending\, inspired by George Meredith’s poem of the same name\, in the original setting for violin and piano. Three instant classics from the 21st Century\, including settings of Longfellow and e e cummings\, will complete what we hope will be an afternoon to inspire us all.

SUMMARY:Somerset Chamber Choir Concert - Rachmaninov All-night Vigil (Vespers)
DESCRIPTION:Somerset Chamber Choir\nRichard Laing – Conductor/Violin\nAnita D’Attellis – Piano \nA candlelit performance of hauntingly beautiful settings of the Russian Orthodox liturgy\, with evocative poetry and timeless classics for violin and piano\, enhanced by projected iconography and lighting. \nArguably the greatest choral music ever written by a Russian and one of the finest choral works in the entire repertoire\, Sergei Rachmaninov’s All-night Vigil (Vespers) is a tour-de-force of stunning virtuosity and extreme pathos. Featuring 15 exquisite sections corresponding to the sequence of the Russian Orthodox liturgy\, the All-night Vigil divides the choir into 11 vocal parts and features some of the lowest bass parts ever written. \nThis candlelit performance of Rachmaninov’s setting of the Russian Orthodox all-night liturgical sequence of Vespers\, Matins and First Hour will be immensely atmospheric occasion enhanced with iconography and coloured lighting projected onto the stark white walls of the chapel. It promises to be a treat both for eyes as well as ears! \nInterspersed throughout the concert will be evocative poetry readings to complement the Russian Orthodox theme\, together with three achingly beautiful arrangements of timeless classics for violin and piano – Rachmaninov’s 18th variation from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini\, Vocalise and Prayer from Piano Concerto No.2 – each of which has the power to inspire refection on sacred Russian texts. \nProgramme Details – Rachmaninov All-night Vigil (Vespers) \n• All-night Vigil (Vespers) – Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943)\n• Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini\, Op. 43 – Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943)\n• Vocalise – Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943)\n• Prayer – Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) \nTickets: £18\, 15\, (reserved)\, & £11 (unreserved). SUMMARY:Somerset Chamber Choir Concert - Paradisi Gloria
DESCRIPTION:Programme Details – Paradisi Gloria! \n\nStabat Mater – Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1787)\nSalve Regina In F minor – Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725)\nTrumpet Concerto – Giuseppi Tartini (1692-1770)\n\nInterval\n\n\nGloria in D RV589 – Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678-1741)\n\nThe early eighteenth century was a golden age for music in the courts and cathedrals of Rome\, Naples and Venice\, which would never again be equaled. Venice\, in particular\, was a hotbed of creativity. This was the city where Vivaldiand Scarlatti lived close by Canaletto\, amidst the canals which had recently been navigated by Gabrieli and Monteverdi\, Bellini\, Tintoretto and Veronese. \nThe four works in our summer concert were all written within a single decade by Italian composers at the height of their powers\, and yet each is as different from the other as the works of Brahms and Wagner. Vivaldi’s famous Gloria\, one of the most popular of all choral works\, is deceptively simple\, written for just two soloists and four choral parts\, while the astonishing Stabat Mater by Domenico Scarlatti is composed for ten different voices\, ensuring a richness of sonority which few other composers have attempted. Completing our programme will be the short\, but perfectly-formed Trumpet Concerto by Tartiniand a gorgeous Salve Regina by the young Scarlatti’s father\, Alessandro Scarlatti\, which features our two vocal soloists – the young American soprano April Fredrick and baroque specialist mezzo-soprano Cathy Bell. \nFor  this very special evening we will be joined by Southern Sinfonia and trumpeter Steve Leein the generous acoustic of Wells Cathedral. Let us whisk you away to experience the glories of Italy\, without the check-in queues and eye-watering prices. Reserve your ticket now! \nTickets: £25\, £20\, (nave reserved)\, £15 & £10 (front/rear side aisles unreserved). Children/students half-price.

SUMMARY:Somerset Chamber Choir Concert - Serenade to Music
DESCRIPTION:Serenade to Music – A wide ranging and multi-faceted programme celebrates the power of music in a brilliant sequence of choral and solo vocal works from the C18th and C20th centuries. Some great instrumental works are included too for this Graham Caldbeck’s final concert as the choir’s Musical Director after an extraordinarily successful 27 years. SUMMARY:Concert by Somerset Chamber Choir - A Musical Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:Somerset Chamber Choir \nHelen Lunt ‘cello\nRichard Pearce organ\nGraham Caldbeck conductor \nA Musical Epiphany \nBeautiful seasonal music performed by CandlelightMusic by: Palestrina\, Parsons\, H. Praetorius\, Dering\, Scheidt\, Byrd\, Sweelinck\, Weelkes\, Cornelius\, Warlock\, Howells\, Poulenc\, Edmundson\, Mathias\, Bennett\, Will Todd & Ola Gjeilo \nOur New Year concert will be held on the day following the Feast of the Epiphany – that time of year which marks the visit of the Three Wise Men (or Magi\, or Kings) to honour the baby Jesus in the stable at Bethlehem. \nInstead of gifts of gold\, frankincense and myrrh\, we shall present a fascinatingly rich and varied programme of seasonal music\, stretching from the 16th & 17th centuries to the present day – with old favourites to be enjoyed and some exciting new and unfamiliar music to be discovered. \nMusic from these shores forms the core of the programme\, but music from France\, Germany\, Holland\, Italy\, Norway and Canada is also included\, thereby making the evening a truly international celebration. \nOne of our sopranos\, Helen Lunt\, will leave the ranks for one piece to perform with the choir on the ‘cello; and we are again joined by our regular virtuoso organist\, Richard Pearce. There will be several opportunities for the audience to join in with the singing\, too. For everyone present we hope that this event will truly prove to be A Musical Epiphany. \nTickets £18; £15; £11 from Taunton Visitor Centre Market House\, Fore St\, Taunton TA1 1JD
