SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects – The Myth of Venice – C16 music for Cornetto and Keyboards
DESCRIPTION:Gawain Glenton\, cornetto and Silas Wollston\, organo di legno\nThe appointment of the Flemish composer Adrian Willaert at Venice’s Basilica San Marco in 1527 heralded the emergence of Venice as a cultural super-power. This recital explores the work of original composers who built the ‘myth of Venice’ in sound.\nReviews of the CD of the same name are dazzling: ‘Glenton’s own diminutions are gently and lightly patted into the larger musical line. Together with Wollston’s calm\, the whole thing sways like a dance made of chiffon.’\nGramophone

SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects - A Choral Feast from 1623
DESCRIPTION:Four hundred years after the death of William Byrd\, we still delight in singing a huge number of his works. For him music was an entire language\, telling of the religious changes through his lifetime as well as describing the lighter side of life. \n1623 saw the passing of two other notable composers: \nThomas Weelkes\, a prolific composer and organist at Winchester and then Chichester Cathedral\, by all accounts a somewhat controversial fellow in Church circles. \nDanish composer Mogens Pedersøn was the most highly regarded musician in the court of Christian IV. He studied extensively in Italy and accompanied the entourage of Anne of Denmark when she came to England to marry James I of England and VI of Scotland\, possibly meeting William Byrd during his several years in London.

SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects – Spirit of the Blues
DESCRIPTION:The first Third Thursday of 2023 starts with a new sort of early music\, blues and spirituals dating from around a century ago\, sung by Julia Titus with Steve Graham on cornet and Mike Denham on keyboard. Both Steve and Mike are well known on the Jazz circuits in the South West and further afield\, being part of the nationally acclaimed Sunset Cafe Stompers. They frequently work with Julia Titus\, an actress\, poet\, singer and songwriter. Among her talents is the ability to convincingly put over the songs of that great blues & vaudeville singer of the 1920s\, Bessie Smith. Building on her passion for the ‘Empress of the Blues’\, Julia started to perform as Ma Bessie\, sharing the music of Ms Smith and her contemporaries with a new generation of listeners. Expect to hear classics including ‘Careless Love’\, ‘Nobody Knows When You’re Down And Out’\, ‘Gimme A Pig Foot (And A Bottle Of Beer)’\, and of course ‘Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight’\, all delivered with verve and style. The programme\, in this lovely venue\, will be completed with a selection of Gospel numbers\, another genre in which Julia delights!

SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects - The Mouthpiece of the Gods
DESCRIPTION:John Kenny returns to Culmstock this year with his one man show\, called The Mouthpiece of the Gods\, a highly dramatic story in which he explores the long history of lip reed instruments: shells\, animal horns\, bronze horns\, straying into the realms of zoomorphism\, cultural diasporas\, and eventual reassimilation. This might sound a bit like hard work\, but it will be extremely entertaining! John is a consummate performer and player of all things windy\, bot to be missed!\nThere will be many examples of blown instruments of all shapes and sizes\, designed to sound down the ages for a wide range of purposes… and a chance to meet the mighty Carnyx!\nThis programme was originally to be performed in July\, but was unavoidably postponed

SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects – J S Bach Mass in B minor
DESCRIPTION:BEMP’s biennial Grand Baroque series was somewhat interrupted due to circumstances we all hope are now well behind us… We return with a flourish in 2022\, bringing perhaps the most grand of all baroque works to life in Exeter Cathedral\, Mass in B minor by JS Bach. Bach was feeling his years when he completed the full mass sequence\, but he was also making a statement about the immensely inventive and complex musical legacy he was leaving\, much of it unrecognised in his lifetime. \nThe work will be recreated in the expert hands of BEMP’s principal director JanJoost van Elburg with a hand picked choir of singers from all over the UK and western Europe. The orchestra will be led by Oliver Webber with members of the Monteverdi String Band and other invited players from this country’s wealth of expert period instrumentalists. JanJoost is a consummate and widely acknowledged interpreter of Bach’s work; he was recently honoured to work with internationally renowned Bach expert\, Ton Koopman\, preparing choirs for tours of the USA and Netherlands of this baroque masterpiece. \nThe soloists are Amy Haworth (soprano) and Mark Dobell (tenor) who together with the bass\, Jimmy Holliday\, are all highly regarded members of The Sixteen\, The Tallis Scholars. Gabrieli Consort and other prominent vocal ensembles; counter tenor Guy James of the Gesualdo Six is a rising star in the early music world. We are delighted to have them all in the team for this exciting performance.

DESCRIPTION:We are absolutely thrilled and greatly honoured to be able to bring these two\nsupremely accomplished musicians to Culmstock. \nCrispian Steele-Perkins has received widespread critical acclaim\nas a trumpet player with a purity of tone and artistic subtlety\nsecond to none. We look forward to\nhis visit as much for his playing as his renowned enthusiasm and wit.\nDavid Hill is a world renowned conductor and organist\, a Fellow\nof the Royal College of Organists at the age of just 17. His many\nposts have included Sub-Organist at Durham Cathedral\, Master of the\nMusic at Winchester Cathedral (1987-2002)\, Master of the Music at\nWestminster Cathedral\, Associate Conductor and then Artistic Director of\nthe Philharmonia Chorus (1986-1997)\, Director of Music at John’s College\,\nCambridge (2003-2007). SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects - Newe Vialles - 'The compleat violist'
DESCRIPTION:Henrik Persson and Caroline Ritchie: bass viols\nJamie Akers: theorbo and guitar\nPicture the music collection of an imaginary viol player\, living in London at the turn of the eighteenth century. Performed on two original bass viols built in 1675 and 1703 respectively\, this programme explores the repertoire that might have been played by their first owners. The beautiful decorations on each viol point to people of artistic taste and sensibility\, with money to spend – possibly educated on a European “grand tour”\, or frequenters of London book and music dealers. What would they have played? Music by English viol players such as Christopher Simpson\, Playford’s dance tunes\, pieces by immigrant composers working in London…perhaps they even had a copy of Marais’ first book\, or tried their hand at a Corelli sonata or two?\nThe programme features music by Christopher Simpson\, John Jenkins\, Gottfried Finger\, Johann Schenck\, Marin Marais\, and Arcangelo Corelli.

SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects - Brilliant Baroque from Bologna!
DESCRIPTION:Blackdowns Early Music Projects has been silent since November 2019\, but at last\, we are able to get back together and sing!\nWe are absolutely delighted to announce that we shall be working with The Musical & Amicable Society under their Director Martin Perkins who will lead from the keyboard\, to bring a programme of very rarely heard choral and instrumental baroque music from Bologna\, all composed by musicians associated with the Basilica of San Petronio.\nBologna was an active music centre\, alongside those in Florence and Venice and there is much to enjoy in this music. Martin has transcribed most of the pieces himself during the course of his own studies and we singers are really looking forward to delving into this repertoire\, with plenty of double choir\, florid violin and gamba accompaniments.\nNone of the composers is particularly well known as yet\, please allow us to introduce you to some new old music!

SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects - The Musical & Amicable Society - Purcell & friends
DESCRIPTION:‘Purcell and Friends’ brings together some gems of the late 17th century to present popular songs and tunes from Purcell’s theatre works alongside music by his continental contemporaries performed by Martin Perkins (organ)\, Henrik Persson ( gamba/cello) Lisete da Silva (baroque flute/recorders) and Nicola Wemyss (mezzo).\nThe original Musical and Amicable Society was founded in 1762 by James Kempson\, who directed the choir at St Bartholomew’s Chapel\, Birmingham. Together with fellow musicians from St Philip’s Church (now Birmingham Cathedral)\, Kempson and his singers gathered on a regular basis at Cooke’s tavern in the Cherry Orchard “for practice and recreation”!\nIn 2003\, Kate Fawcett and Martin Perkins decided to revive this historic society as a collective of professional period-instrument specialists\, performing in combinations ranging from small ensembles to full orchestra.\nIndividually\, the members maintain successful freelance careers with some of Europe’s most prestigious period-instrument ensembles. Collectively\, they explore Baroque and Classical repertoire\, both familiar and forgotten\, recreating the soundscape of an earlier era for a twenty-first century audience.

SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects - Newe Vialles - Good Againe
DESCRIPTION:At last! Real Live Music…\nThe BEMP Third Thursday recital series opens on May 20th in All Saints’ Church\, Culmstock\nFirst up will be Newe Vialles\, who are delighted to be returning to Culmstock for a recital of characterful and quirky music from 17th century England. The programme features sumptuous lyra viol music by the soldier turned composer Tobias Hume\, swift divisions by the master of English viol-playing Christopher Simpson\, and delicate dance duos by John Jenkins\, whose career spanned almost the whole of the century\, from the time of Charles I until well into the Restoration. We are delighted that this time\, Catherine Bass will join us for a set of lute and continuo songs\, and we will end the recital with a sonata by Benjamin Hely\, a little-known English composer and violist from the end of the century\, whose music shows definite hints of the high baroque. This will be our first public performance since the beginning of the pandemic and we hope that\, as Hume titles one of his pieces\, things will soon indeed be “good againe”.

SUMMARY:GRAND BAROQUE IV: Sances and Biber in Exeter Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:Giovanni Felice Sances (c1600 – 1679) Missa Sancta Maria Magdalenae\nHeinrich Ignatz von Biber (1644- 1704) Requiem à 15\nDirector JANJOOST VAN ELBURG\nSoloists: Amy Haworth\, Claire Lees\, Caroline Trevor\, Ingeborg Bröcheler\,\nMark Dobell\, Mark Bonney\, Thomas Flint & Simon Whiteley\nThe Monteverdi String Band\, English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble \nBorn in Rome\, Sances established himself as a composer of secular music and virtuoso tenor. He was recruited to the Austrian Habsburg Court at Vienna in 1636 and remained there for over 40 years\, first as a singer\, then assistant chapel master and finally imperial chapel master. Just one source of the manuscript of Missa Sancta Maria Magdalenae exists\, in an extensive collection in Kromeríž\, now in Czechoslovakia. The scoring is opulent (seven voices\, two trombetti\, four sackbuts\, two violins and four viols) making it eminently suitable for the Grand Baroque series. \nHeinrich Biber was born in Bohemia to a violinist father and showed early promise as an all round musician\, playing strings\, keyboards and brass. He was mployed in the Salzburg Archbishopric and created much immensely fine music for the Prince Archbishop Maximillian Gandolf and the spacious acoustic of Salzburg Cathedral. Biber’s Mass and Vespers settings are renowned for extensive solo instrumental and vocal writing\, designed for just this space. When the Archbishop died suddenly on May 3rd 1687\, the funeral service was arranged immediately\, leaving Biber just 6 days to produce a new Requiem setting. The result is fantastic; he decided on 15 concerto parts\, six voices\, two trumpets\, three sackbuts and four independent string parts with supporting continuo\, in the unusually bright key of A major.

SUMMARY:The Lute Family: A Lecture/Recital by Lynda Sayce ~ a history of the lute
DESCRIPTION:BEMP SPRING FESTIVAL: Lynda Sayce will bring a number of her favourite examples of members of the lute family to share in her ‘lute roadshow’\, offering a history of the instrument\, illustrated with 10 or so different and contrasting lutes covering almost a millennium’s worth of music. Each instrument will be described in its historical context and Lynda will then play each one so the audience sees and hears a huge variety of music ranging from a maqam on an Arabic oud to an excerpt from a high baroque suite. Each instrument is chosen with great care so that they make a stunning visual display\, ranging from a tiny soprano lute to a 2 metre theorbo.
