DESCRIPTION:Music on the Levels announces details of its free concert on Sunday 25 January 2024 in St Mary’s Church\, Main Road\, Westonzoyland\, TA7 0EP. The concert starts at 3 pm and refreshments are available at modest charge from 2.15 pm. \nPerforming at this concert will be Trio Paradis\, much appreciated at Music on the Levels many times over the past few years. \nThe programme is entitled Daughters of the Muse\, to mark International Women’s Day on 8 March\, and will consist of music by women composers from over the centuries. \nTrio Paradis consists of Jacquelyn Bevan\, piano\, Lisa Betteridge\, violin\, and Linda Stocks\, cello. The performers will introduce the music with biographical details about the composers.  \n‘We specialise in performing music by women composers\,’ says Jacquelyn\, ‘and this time we are presenting a varied programme of pieces with a spring-time theme\, from 12th century Abbess Hildegard of Bingen to the 20th century\, including works by Clara Schumann\, Laura Netzel\, Elfrida Andree\, Helena Lopuska\, Mel Bonis\, Cecile Chaminade and Lili Boulanger\, along with a rarely-performed Scherzo by Bath composer\, Kate Loder.’  \nArrangements for this concert\nThere is no need to book as the church’s capacity have never yet been exceeded. However\, it should be noted that seats are available on a first come\, first served basis.\nIn order to help with the artists’ and other costs a raffle is held. In addition\, donations are encouraged. It costs over £400 to put on a concert.

SUMMARY:Harmonia - Bridgwater Choral Society - Singing Day
DESCRIPTION:A Singing Day is planned for Saturday 9th March 2024 from 10.00 until 4.00\, and anyone who is interested will be made very welcome. The repertoire will include John Rutter’s Feel The Spirit\, Cantique de Jean Racine by Fauré and secular song arrangements.  There will be vocal coaching\, and help with music reading for those who feel they need it.  Music\, Tea and Coffee included. The cost will be £15.\nCome and join us for a sociable\, uplifting and satisfying musical experience.\nThe choir is bouncing back after the pandemic\, and has doubled in size\, with several very successful and enjoyable concerts. They have been recognised by Classic FM\, who have added them to their Carol playlist\, and are making an excellent sound\, as well as becoming a very sociable and bonded group. The programme includes \nMass in D by Dvorak\nRequiem by Matthew Coleridge\nLove Divine by Howard Goodall\nPeace I leave with you by Amy Beech \nThis is a new programme of music for the Society and we are very excited to be singing such moving and melodic pieces. Matthew Coleridge’s Requiem was first published in 2016 in response to becoming a father and is uplifting and life affirming. The Dvorak Mass in D includes gentle tunes as well as dynamic movements. We do hope new singers will come and join us to sing this wonderful music. We rehearse at 7.30pm on Wednesdays at Wellington Prep School Hall. We also hope people will put the date in their diary for the concert in March. Tickets will be available shortly on our website www.wellingtonchoralsociety.org.uk\, from members and on the door.

SUMMARY:Sally Jenkins: Flights of Fancy
DESCRIPTION:The concert features a welcome return of renowned harpist and regular at Music on the Levels\, Sally Jenkins\, who will be presenting a programme entitled Flights of Fancy.\n‘The programme will include music from many of the diverse harp traditions from Europe and beyond\,’ says Sally.\nSally has appeared in many prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Symphony Hall in Birmingham. \nShe is an experienced pedal and early triple harpist\, and has also presented lecture-recitals on the history of the instrument including to the Royal Musicological Society. In developing her musical skills she has worked with some of the UK’s preeminent harpists including Jeanette Bevan in the Royal Ballet Orchestra\, Meinir Heulyn from the Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Frances Kelly of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. \nThe concert starts at 3 pm and refreshments are available at modest charge from 2.15 pm. \nIn order to help with the artists’ and other costs a raffle is held. In addition\, donations are encouraged.

It will make a stirring start for the 2024 series of St John’s\nLunchtime Concerts.\,\nChristian Hopwood\, Brian Pearson\, Kevin Rigg and Stewart Stunell are four trombone players from the Taunton area who make up the trombone section of the Somerset County Orchestra. Between them they have almost 200 years of playing experience and have played in venues around the UK and European countries including Finland\, Germany\, Holland\, Belgium\, Luxembourg\, The Czech Republic\, Eire\, France and Italy. Their music ranges from 16th to 21st centuries and range from classical to religious and on to Jazz and modern.\nRetiring collection in aid of Love Musgrove\, Musgrove League of Friends and St John’s Church.

The semi-final and final are both held in Taunton\, usually across a packed weekend in May. \nThe winning singer will receive a cash prize of £1000 and\, decided separately\, the winning pianist will receive a cash prize of £1000. There will be other cash prizes too. Further information Somerset Song Prize website. \nThe SSP is a competition for art song and it places special importance on the collaborative relationship between the singer and their pianist. Arias from oratorios and operas are not permitted. The definition of art song is reasonably wide\, although competitors must include in their programme a song which is not in their native language. \nIn 2019 the competition received financial support from Somerset Opera\, the Ronald Tickner Educational Trust\, the Amici Choir and private donations. The SSP is immensely grateful to these organisations and individuals for their support. \nThe Somerset Song Prize was inaugurated in 2013 under the aegis of the Taunton Festival of the Arts. The competition has quickly developed an excellent reputation in part due to some great adjudicators – including Iain Burnside\, Elizabeth Watts\, Jonathan Lemalu\, Neal Davies\, Joan Rogers\, Lorna Anderson\, Roger Vingnoles and Malcolm Martineau. The much loved work by Vaughan Williams March: Folk Songs of Somerset will feature in the programme along with other descriptive pieces. The highlight of the concert will be the premiere of a work composed by Jeannette Owen entitled\, “Falls\, Footsteps and Follies”\, an Exploration of Hestercombe.   \nA refreshing Somerset inspired drink will be served during the interval. \nUnder 18 are free if accompanied by an adult.
