DESCRIPTION:Regrettably\, this concert has had to be cancelled due to Covid among the performers. Morris Minor is the singing arm of Chalice Morris and appears regularly at The Vault in Weston-super-Mare and at festivals and events across the region.\nAs usual\, the concert will take place in in St Mary’s Church\, Main Road\, Westonzoyland\, TA7 0EP. Starting at 3 pm with refreshments served from 2.15 pm.  Free entry. Donations welcome.\n‘Bob and I are rather steeped in the English folksongery\,’ says Paul Wilson\, a founder member of Morris Minor\, ‘and Bob has inherited an original copy of Cecil Sharp’s Folk Songs of Somerset from the Rev Kenneth Loveless. who was taught the concertina by William Kimber the Musician for the Headington Quarry Morris Men.\n‘It was hearing Kimber playing set off Sharp collecting Morris Dancing and\, as they say\, the rest is history . . . . . ‘\nPaul goes on to say that he and Bob Cross have been singing Capella together for over 40 years. Bob and Paul were the founders of Morris Minor. They were joined by Derek Bond\, their comic song and monologue specialist\, Andy Hebden their bass voice and melodeon player and Harlan Chapman-Green the main shantyman ( AKA the Handsome Cabin Boy). Unfortunately\, Derek will be away at this time.\nExpect a varied programme of shanties\, folk songs and humour\, introduced by members of the group. Audience participation will be encouraged.

SUMMARY:Musical Meditations for Lent
DESCRIPTION:The Wilbye Quartet have waited a long time to have the opportunity to present their programme designed to prepare us for Lent.  Their programme is to include Chorales from Bach St Matthew Passion and works by Victoria\, Byrd\, Morley\, Tchaikovsky and Bruckner.   \nThe four voices formed into The Wilbye Quartet during Covid restrictions when larger numbers were unable to meet.  They enjoyed themselves so much that they have continued to rehearse  and enjoy performing music both sacred and secular in the South West. \nJane Cresswell – soprano\nLynn Carter – alto\nRoger Bates – tenor\nSimon Davies – bass \nAll are welcome to attend this concert.  Entry will be free but there will be a retiring collection for people to show their appreciation. \nTea and Cakes will be served after the performance.

DESCRIPTION:Our first concert of 2024 continues our exploration of the delightful concerti grossi of Albinoni\, and another of this genre from the acknowledged master of the form\, Handel. Mary will play the only violin concerto composed by Pergolesi\, and the programme includes the Pavane and Chaconne by Purcell\, and two short evocative pieces by Sibelius. We will end this programme with the Serenade for Strings by Lennox Berkeley.

DESCRIPTION:Winter Concert with Somerset Chamber ChoirWe are thrilled that our Patron\, Dame Emma Kirkby\, will join us for this concert\, to perform a small selection of works from the golden age of English Lute Song. \nProgramme to include: \nBYRD Four-Part Mass\nTALLIS Lamentations of Jeremiah I\nDOWLAND Lute Songs \nEmma Kirkby soprano\nAndrea Brown conductor \nThe Private Music… by composers writing in circumstances of exile – some forced to leave Protestant England for their Catholicism\, some obliged through fear to write music for secret ceremony\, others removed from meaningful positions and effectively exiled in their own homes. \nThis will be the choir’s first concert in the Minster since 1992 and we are very excited to return to such a beautiful building right in the centre of Taunton. For her first concert directing the choir\, Andrea has chosen Renaissance music of singular beauty which is sure to transport the audience to a place of utter calm and tranquillity. \nTickets will go on sale towards the end of this year; Friends of the Choir will enjoy a priority booking period for this concert as usual\, and tickets will be available to the public shortly after that – full details of where and how to buy tickets will be shown here soon. DESCRIPTION:Music on the Levels announces details of its free concert on Sunday 25 January 2024 in St Mary’s Church\, Main Road\, Westonzoyland\, TA7 0EP. The concert starts at 3 pm and refreshments are available at modest charge from 2.15 pm. \nPerforming at this concert will be Trio Paradis\, much appreciated at Music on the Levels many times over the past few years. \nThe programme is entitled Daughters of the Muse\, to mark International Women’s Day on 8 March\, and will consist of music by women composers from over the centuries. \nTrio Paradis consists of Jacquelyn Bevan\, piano\, Lisa Betteridge\, violin\, and Linda Stocks\, cello. The performers will introduce the music with biographical details about the composers.  \n‘We specialise in performing music by women composers\,’ says Jacquelyn\, ‘and this time we are presenting a varied programme of pieces with a spring-time theme\, from 12th century Abbess Hildegard of Bingen to the 20th century\, including works by Clara Schumann\, Laura Netzel\, Elfrida Andree\, Helena Lopuska\, Mel Bonis\, Cecile Chaminade and Lili Boulanger\, along with a rarely-performed Scherzo by Bath composer\, Kate Loder.’  \nArrangements for this concert\nThere is no need to book as the church’s capacity have never yet been exceeded. However\, it should be noted that seats are available on a first come\, first served basis.\nIn order to help with the artists’ and other costs a raffle is held. In addition\, donations are encouraged. It costs over £400 to put on a concert.

SUMMARY:Harmonia - Bridgwater Choral Society - Singing Day
DESCRIPTION:A Singing Day is planned for Saturday 9th March 2024 from 10.00 until 4.00\, and anyone who is interested will be made very welcome. The repertoire will include John Rutter’s Feel The Spirit\, Cantique de Jean Racine by Fauré and secular song arrangements.  There will be vocal coaching\, and help with music reading for those who feel they need it.  Music\, Tea and Coffee included. The cost will be £15.\nCome and join us for a sociable\, uplifting and satisfying musical experience.\nThe choir is bouncing back after the pandemic\, and has doubled in size\, with several very successful and enjoyable concerts. They have been recognised by Classic FM\, who have added them to their Carol playlist\, and are making an excellent sound\, as well as becoming a very sociable and bonded group. The programme includes \nMass in D by Dvorak\nRequiem by Matthew Coleridge\nLove Divine by Howard Goodall\nPeace I leave with you by Amy Beech \nThis is a new programme of music for the Society and we are very excited to be singing such moving and melodic pieces. Matthew Coleridge’s Requiem was first published in 2016 in response to becoming a father and is uplifting and life affirming. The Dvorak Mass in D includes gentle tunes as well as dynamic movements. We do hope new singers will come and join us to sing this wonderful music. We rehearse at 7.30pm on Wednesdays at Wellington Prep School Hall. We also hope people will put the date in their diary for the concert in March. Tickets will be available shortly on our website www.wellingtonchoralsociety.org.uk\, from members and on the door.
