SUMMARY:Taunton Sinfonietta
DESCRIPTION:Taunton Sinfonietta’s Chamber Ensemble Series\, now in its sixth year\, continues at St James Church Taunton on Saturday 7 May at 7:30 pm. This season sees a return to its origins with oboist Lynn Carter bringing her skills to some marvellous Mozart\, a fabulous Finzi Interlude and a bit of Bax. \nShe is joined by Sinfonietta Musical Director and Leader Mary Eade\, Principal Second Violinist Anna Cockroft\, violinist and composer Sarah Wormell playing viola\, and Divertimento impresario Vicky Evans on cello. \nThese five musicians come together in the South West from widely diverse backgrounds\, from Dartington to Freiburg to Chicago and of course London\, and bring a wealth of experience to perform at the highest standard. \nThe programme features mostly Mozart – his Hofmeister quartet op. 499\, the popular oboe quartet and a duet for violin and viola. \nGerald Finzi’s dramatic Interlude for oboe and string quartet and a quick Irish jig by Arnold Bax round out an attractive\, not-too-serious evening. Potted intros by each of the players provide further musical background and a glimpse into the personalities behind the instruments. \nTickets are available at the Taunton Visitor Centre and on the door. DESCRIPTION:The first BEMP event in 2016 is on Sunday April 10th at 6pm in St. John the Baptist (Parish) Church in Wellington\,  led by principal director\, JanJoost van Elburg. DESCRIPTION:This will be Stephen Bell’s final concert with TCS before he retires as Music Director after 7 years in charge. Taunton Sinfonietta provide the orchestra and soloists will be Louise Innes (mezzo-soprano) and James Geidt (baritone). \nThe concert will feature the 1980 Walker organ\, installed when Stephen arrived in Taunton as Director of Music at King’s. The organist will be Stephen’s son\, Simon Bell\, now Director of the Schola Cantorum Choir at Tewkesbury Abbey and Organist of Dean Close School\, Cheltenham. \nThe programme features both French and English music starting with Maurice Duruflé’s ‘Requiem’\, composed in 1948 in memory of his father. Similar in approach to the famous Requiem by Gabriel Faure\, it is based on plainsong-style melodies\, and is an evocative and highly atmospheric work\, ideally suited to the generous acoustic of the Chapel. \nIn the second half the focus switches to England. The choral items are both by Vaughan Williams; ‘Five Mystical Songs’ for solo baritone and chorus\, based on poems by George Herbert\, and ‘Toward the Unknown Region’\, text by the American poet Walt Whitman\, whose spiritually–charged writing appealed to the composer throughout his life. DESCRIPTION:The Phoenix Singers \nSaturday 19th March 2016\, St John the Evangelist Church\, Taunton \nTHE CANTICLE OF BROTHER SUN \nMusic inspired by the words of prayers and hymns \nThe Phoenix Singers under their music director Andrew Maddocks\, will be performing an evening of sacred music in St John’s Church\, Taunton on Saturday 19th March at 7.30pm. \nThe concert is a programme of music inspired by the words of prayers and hymns.  Saint Francis of Assisi believed that nature itself was the mirror of God and in his ‘Canticle of the Creatures’ he mentions Brother Sun and Sister Moon.  The Phoenix Singers will sing a setting of these canticle words by Grayston Ives.  This piece became the inspiration for an evening of choral music in which composers such as John Rutter\, Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten feature. \nThe programme includes the 8th century words of Be thou my vision heard as a hymn and then in a very lyrical setting by Bob Chilcott.  F.S. Pierpoint’s words of For the beauty of the earth will be sung as a hymn to an adapted folk melody\, followed by John Rutter’s very famous choral setting of the same words.  John Bunyan’s words for He who would valiant be comes as a hymn in an arrangement of an English folk tune by Vaughan Williams\, followed by his setting of words from Pilgrim’s Progress\, Valiant-for-Truth.   \nEd Jenkins\, Music Director at Queen’s College\, Taunton will accompany the choir. \nFurther details can be found on the choir’s website\, whilst tickets priced £12 can be purchased online at www.thephoenixsingers.co.uk\, at the Taunton Visitor Centre or by phoning 01823 432704.

DESCRIPTION:Norman is married to Ruth\, who is sister to Annie and Reg. Reg is married to Sarah\, and Annie isn’t married to anyone\, but is friends with Tom\, a vet. Annie is\, however\, planning a naughty weekend in Hastings with her sister’s husband\, Norman. Reg and Sarah are coming down to Hold The Fort and look after Mother. Nothing\, of course\, goes according to plan. \nThe Taunton Thespians have been fortunate enough to secure one of the few weeks available in the legendary Chiswick and Mortlake Players’ revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s Round and Round the Garden\, first performed in the suburbs of London as part of the Norman Conquests’ Silver Anniversary Tour in 1998. Eighteen years on\, their portrayal of this wonderful comedy\, rooted firmly in the compost rich soil of mid-70s sitcom humour\, is just as robust and funny as ever. These six wonderful actors have grown up with Norman\, as it were\, and audiences are in for a treat. \nAlan Coles\, Lorna Evans\, Clare Fidler\, Brian Lewis\, Nikki Court and Rob Smith will storm the Brewhouse stage from 8th to 12th March\, finishing their whirlwind week with a West End Gala Night on Saturday 12th March. Patrons can anticipate all the glamour and glitz of a London opening night – the celebrities\, the dresses\, the buzz in the foyer\, the flashing cameras and the red carpet – so ensure you purchase your tickets well in advance! \nTicket prices are: £10 on Tuesday 8th and the Saturday matinée on 12th\, £14 on Wednesday to Friday (9th-11th) and £17.50 for the West End Gala Night on Saturday 12th March\, which will include a souvenir programme (to be signed by the cast at the end of the performance) and a glass of wine. Our usual concession price of £5 will apply to all performances except the West End Gala Night.
