SUMMARY:Collegium Singers – Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Collegium Singers enters its 25th year as a chamber choir singing a work which has long been associated with much larger choral forces. \nEin Deutsches Requiem is most often performed with full orchestra\, however at the request of his publisher\, Brahms created a version of the score to be made available for chamber performance with piano accompaniment (four hands one piano). This version of the work travelled to England for its British debut at a private residence in London\, presented in English and without the Fifth Movement. \nBrahms himself conducted around 30 singers and two pianists at that event.  The English translation used then has been lost\, so we shall be singing the original German texts drawn from verses of the Lutheran Bible. \nThe choir will be led by Tomos Watkins who has recently graduated with distinction from his postgraduate conductors’ programme and will be joined by two talented young opera students\, Freya Holliman and Jack Bowtell\, from Cardiff to perform the Soprano and Baritone solos.  The pianists will be our well-known local musicians\, Alison Pink and Karen Paul. \nThe choir will also sing the Stabat Mater by Giuseppe Verdi. \nTickets:-  Adults £15\, Students £9\, Under 12’s free \nTickets on line through choir web site or from  Taunton Visitor Centre\, Market House\, Fore Street\, Taunton\, Somerset\, TA1 1JD \nTel: 01823-340470  Open Monday – Saturday 9.30 am to 4.30 pm

DESCRIPTION:Programme Details – Paradisi Gloria! \n\nStabat Mater – Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1787)\nSalve Regina In F minor – Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725)\nTrumpet Concerto – Giuseppi Tartini (1692-1770)\n\nInterval\n\n\nGloria in D RV589 – Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678-1741)\n\nThe early eighteenth century was a golden age for music in the courts and cathedrals of Rome\, Naples and Venice\, which would never again be equaled. Venice\, in particular\, was a hotbed of creativity. This was the city where Vivaldiand Scarlatti lived close by Canaletto\, amidst the canals which had recently been navigated by Gabrieli and Monteverdi\, Bellini\, Tintoretto and Veronese. \nThe four works in our summer concert were all written within a single decade by Italian composers at the height of their powers\, and yet each is as different from the other as the works of Brahms and Wagner. Vivaldi’s famous Gloria\, one of the most popular of all choral works\, is deceptively simple\, written for just two soloists and four choral parts\, while the astonishing Stabat Mater by Domenico Scarlatti is composed for ten different voices\, ensuring a richness of sonority which few other composers have attempted. Our aims are to share our music with the community\, raise funds for local organisations and to act as ambassadors for the force. \nUnder the professional leadership and tuition of our musical director Marysia Gorska-Saj and accompanist Alison Howell\, the choir has developed an extensive repertoire\, from classical male choral music\, operatic choruses and songs of stage and film musicals to arrangements of popular songs.
