SUMMARY:Music on the Levels: Daisy Chapman
DESCRIPTION:Daisy Chapman is an incredibly well-travelled pianist and vocalist who draws influences from the anti-folk world. Every song harbours a dark story of love\, lust and loss told through her exquisite voice and piano\, with Sue Lord on violin bringing the performance to harmonious ending every time.\nSince her first solo release in 2006\, Daisy has proven herself as a talented and shrewd songwriter in demand. Three albums have been recorded by renowned producer Ali Chant at Toybox Studios (PJ Harvey\, Gruff Rhys\, Giant Sand\, Seasick Steve)\, the most recent (She Took Flight 2023) was recorded at Studio Nord\, Bremen DE and Nine Volt Leap\, Wiltshire UK.\nIn 2009 Daisy’s piano style and versatility was noticed by UK prog rockers Crippled Black Phoenix (Seasons of Mist Records)\, and since then on and off Daisy has travelled as pianist/BV with the band on tours covering every corner of Europe as well as a short trip to China. Daisy was also chosen as vocalist on their cover of ACDC’s “Let Me Put My Love Into You” which was used in Classic Rock Magazine’s cover CD – a stark departure from her wistful singing style\, proving her adaptability in musical genres.\nIn 2012 Daisy teamed up with violinist Sue Lord. The duo have been playing together ever since\, bringing a sonic dynamic to her music\, the violin almost acting as an additional voice. As a backing singer for well-known artists\, she has proven her skills many times. As a performer\, Daisy Chapman has a appeared at Glastonbury\, 2000Trees\, Migration Festival (Taiwan)\, Breminale (Germany) and worldwide tours. One of her songs (a cover of Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’) won an Independent Music Award which was jusdged by Tom Waits – this certainly raised her profile with her peers.\nThe 2023 album ‘She Took Flight’ was arranged and written by Daisy with Red Carousel quartet on strings. Daisy’s love of string instruments (as featured heavily in 2009 ‘The Green Eyed’) is now ever more apparent and her skill at scoring has certainly grown over the years.\nIn addition to her solo work\, her newest project is prog band ‘Venus Principle’ where she shares lead vocals with ex CBP singer Daniel Anghede\, their debut album was released on Prophecy Records in 2022.

SUMMARY:Music on the Levels: Trio Paradis - Birds and Beasts
DESCRIPTION:Trio Paradis (Jacquelyn Bevan – piano\, Lisa Betteridge – violin and Linda Stocks – cello) presents a musical menagerie: cats\, dogs\, birds\, fish … and even an elephant\, including numbers from Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals and well-known songs from Disney films.\n‘The concert is suitable for all ages’\, says Jacquelyn\, ‘so bring the family!’\nTrio Paradis formed in 2008 and is based in Somerset. The performers are founder members of Musicians South West CIC\, a not-for-profit company that brings music events to new audiences\, particularly those who have limited access to live performance. The trio now plays over 120 concerts each year\, including 10 monthly series of informal daytime Café Concerts in community venues across Somerset and Wiltshire\, from South Petherton to Malmesbury. Audience reactions include: ‘Excellent musicianship…and highly entertaining too. We loved the introductions and humour!’

DESCRIPTION:Experience tomorrow’s stars today! \nOur free concert on Sunday 26 February 2023 at 3.00 pm in St Mary’s Church\, Main Road\, Westonzoyland\, TA7 0EP features guitarist Devon Salinas and singer Sophie Green. \nSophie and Devon will be putting their own stamp on covers of popular standards. Both are in their final year at Leeds Conservatoire and are already in demand at festivals and to perform with other solo artists and bands. \nSophie is a very passionate singer born in Wales. Her favourite genres include blues and rock but she can easily adapt to most other styles. \n‘I aspire to write music with my band and gig more with my own material to continue my journey as a musician\,’ says Sophie\, ‘I’ve already had the great opportunity to play at many festivals over the summer which has helped build up my musicianship.’ \nDevon is a dedicated musician from America and is studying jazz guitar. He has worked with many solo artists and bands in diverse genres such as jazz\, funk and neo-soul helping them push their own individual sound while giving him many opportunities to travel and perform. He aspires to continue to work with different artists to play at more venues such as festivals and shows like BBC Introducing. \n‘We are going to do a set list of covers’\, says Devon when asked specifically about the concert in Westonzoyland. ‘to name a few\, we will be performing songs like Isn’t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder\, American Boy\, September\, Stand By Me and so on. \n‘It will be all in that genre of pop tunes. And we will be playing together. So Sophie will be singing and I will be accompanying her with guitar!’ \nDevon also has a local connection in that he studied at Bridgwater and Taunton College completing the Performance pathway on the level 3 Music Technology and Performance Extended Diploma in 2019 before gaining a place at the prestigious Leeds Conservatoire.

DESCRIPTION:David Davies will give a 45 minute recital on the church’s fine Willis organ. The afternoon will be rounded of with the serving of Tea and Cakes.\nDavid Davies is Organist of Buckfast Abbey and Organist at the University of Exeter. He trained as an organist\, pianist and conductor at Eton College\, Magdalen College\, Oxford\, and the Institute of Sacred Music\, Yale University. David has held church and cathedral appointments both in the USA and the UK\, most recently as Assistant Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral and Sub-Organist and Director of the Girls’ Choir at Guildford Cathedral.\nHe has given concerts across the USA\, Japan\, South Africa and in several European countries. DESCRIPTION:The breadth and depth of Reg Meuross’s material is unparalleled in contemporary folk: songs about forgotten heroes\, famous names\, folk legends\, the climate emergency\, tales from the kitchen sink and news from the world stage; if something needs to be sung about then Reg Meuross has a song for it. \nMeuross has the gift of being able to touch people through his songs and performance\, painting pictures that remain with the listener long after the song has been sung. \nHe performed a specially-composed song for Westonzoyland in 2020. \nMasterfully accompanying himself on his ‘44 Martin six-string guitar\, harmonica\, tenor guitar\, banjo and dulcimer and captivating audiences with his beautiful tenor voice\, witnessing a Reg Meuross performance is to experience a journey into the heart\, soul and songs of one of England’s finest writers. \nThere are currently no statutory requirements with regard to Covid. However\, In accordance with the government guidance that the pandemic is not yet over\, Music on the Levels is retaining the informal booking system and requests that audiences observe sensible precautions as a courtesy to each other and to help provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone.\nRefreshments (tea\, coffee\, choice of cakes) are available at a modest charge from 2.15 pm until the start of the concert.\nIn order to help with the artists’ and other costs a raffle is held. In addition donations are encouraged. DESCRIPTION:We are absolutely thrilled and greatly honoured to be able to bring these two\nsupremely accomplished musicians to Culmstock. \nCrispian Steele-Perkins has received widespread critical acclaim\nas a trumpet player with a purity of tone and artistic subtlety\nsecond to none. He collects and restores antique trumpets upon\nwhich he has performed and recorded with The Academy of\nAncient Music\, The Kings Consort and The English Baroque Soloists.\nAppropriately\, he plays the theme tune to one of the BBC’s l\nlongest-running and most popular TV programmes\, the Antiques\nRoadshow\, among many other screen credits. We look forward to\nhis visit as much for his playing as his renowned enthusiasm and wit.\nDavid Hill is a world renowned conductor and organist\, a Fellow\nof the Royal College of Organists at the age of just 17. His many\nposts have included Sub-Organist at Durham Cathedral\, Master of the\nMusic at Winchester Cathedral (1987-2002)\, Master of the Music at\nWestminster Cathedral\, Associate Conductor and then Artistic Director of\nthe Philharmonia Chorus (1986-1997)\, Director of Music at John’s College\,\nCambridge (2003-2007). He was appointed 9th Musical Director of The BBC\nSingers\, is Musical Director of The Bach Choir and directs several other\nprestigious organisations here and abroad\,\nAs an organist\, David Hill has given recitals in most of the major\nvenues in the UK and has toured extensively abroad – and now appears\nwith Crispian in All Saints’ Culmstock.

Join countertenor Joe Levy accompanied on the piano by conductor Konstantinos Terzakis\, for an evening of music from across the Renaissance and Baroque periods. This includes works by Purcell\, Dowland and Morley\, as well as many that rarely get performed but are treasures nonetheless.You will hear not only about the songs themselves and their composers\, but also the world in which they were created. Music is a reflection of people’s hopes and fears and so through this concert you will learn more about life in 16th and 17th Century England.
