DESCRIPTION:The breadth and depth of Reg Meuross’s material is unparalleled in contemporary folk: songs about forgotten heroes\, famous names\, folk legends\, the climate emergency\, tales from the kitchen sink and news from the world stage; if something needs to be sung about then Reg Meuross has a song for it. \nMeuross has the gift of being able to touch people through his songs and performance\, painting pictures that remain with the listener long after the song has been sung. \nHe performed a specially-composed song for Westonzoyland in 2020. \nMasterfully accompanying himself on his ‘44 Martin six-string guitar\, harmonica\, tenor guitar\, banjo and dulcimer and captivating audiences with his beautiful tenor voice\, witnessing a Reg Meuross performance is to experience a journey into the heart\, soul and songs of one of England’s finest writers. \nThere are currently no statutory requirements with regard to Covid. However\, In accordance with the government guidance that the pandemic is not yet over\, Music on the Levels is retaining the informal booking system and requests that audiences observe sensible precautions as a courtesy to each other and to help provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone.\nRefreshments (tea\, coffee\, choice of cakes) are available at a modest charge from 2.15 pm until the start of the concert.\nIn order to help with the artists’ and other costs a raffle is held. In addition donations are encouraged. It costs an average of £300 to put on a concert. \nThose wishing to go to RegMeuross are asked to contact Frank Challenger on 01278 699071 or email f.challenger@icloud.com so that Music on the Levels can limit numbers if necessary.

DESCRIPTION:We are absolutely thrilled and greatly honoured to be able to bring these two\nsupremely accomplished musicians to Culmstock. \nCrispian Steele-Perkins has received widespread critical acclaim\nas a trumpet player with a purity of tone and artistic subtlety\nsecond to none. He collects and restores antique trumpets upon\nwhich he has performed and recorded with The Academy of\nAncient Music\, The Kings Consort and The English Baroque Soloists.\nAppropriately\, he plays the theme tune to one of the BBC’s l\nlongest-running and most popular TV programmes\, the Antiques\nRoadshow\, among many other screen credits. We look forward to\nhis visit as much for his playing as his renowned enthusiasm and wit.\nDavid Hill is a world renowned conductor and organist\, a Fellow\nof the Royal College of Organists at the age of just 17. His many\nposts have included Sub-Organist at Durham Cathedral\, Master of the\nMusic at Winchester Cathedral (1987-2002)\, Master of the Music at\nWestminster Cathedral\, Associate Conductor and then Artistic Director of\nthe Philharmonia Chorus (1986-1997)\, Director of Music at John’s College\,\nCambridge (2003-2007). He was appointed 9th Musical Director of The BBC\nSingers\, is Musical Director of The Bach Choir and directs several other\nprestigious organisations here and abroad\,\nAs an organist\, David Hill has given recitals in most of the major\nvenues in the UK and has toured extensively abroad – and now appears\nwith Crispian in All Saints’ Culmstock.

DESCRIPTION:Taunton Festival of the Arts organised three competitions for young singers in March of this year. A few of the prize winners from these events have been invited to share some of their winning\, competition songs with the audience. In addition\, there were two days of vocal music making in the February festival classes. Taunton Festival is delighted to be back in action this year. \nDo come and hear the high standard of musical performance achieved by these young people. you are welcome to bring your sandwiches to enjoy with the cold drinks that will be available. The doors will open at 12.00pm and the concert will start at 12.45pm. \nRetiring collection in aid of Taunton Festival of the Arts and St. Johnʼs Church.

Nick & Becki brought their finest fiddling form to Culmstock last year and are back by popular request. There is something very special about the way these two play together\, it looks so easy! We’ve said it before\, and we say it again\, there is no music without the folk to make it! \nNick Wyke & Becki Driscoll are highly-respected musicians\, composers and workshop leaders based in North Devon. They first collaborated as a fiddle duo on a busking trip around Spain and Portugal\, and in the years since have worked with some of the leading lights of the English folk scene\, always pushing the boundaries and developing new and inventive music. \nNick and Becki tell tales in music and song\, adding their own contemporary twists that will surely contribute to the continued web of music that holds us all together.

SUMMARY:Blackdowns Early Music Projects - Newe Vialles - 'The compleat violist'
DESCRIPTION:Henrik Persson and Caroline Ritchie: bass viols\nJamie Akers: theorbo and guitar\nPicture the music collection of an imaginary viol player\, living in London at the turn of the eighteenth century. Performed on two original bass viols built in 1675 and 1703 respectively\, this programme explores the repertoire that might have been played by their first owners. The beautiful decorations on each viol point to people of artistic taste and sensibility\, with money to spend – possibly educated on a European “grand tour”\, or frequenters of London book and music dealers. What would they have played? Music by English viol players such as Christopher Simpson\, Playford’s dance tunes\, pieces by immigrant composers working in London…perhaps they even had a copy of Marais’ first book\, or tried their hand at a Corelli sonata or two?\nThe programme features music by Christopher Simpson\, John Jenkins\, Gottfried Finger\, Johann Schenck\, Marin Marais\, and Arcangelo Corelli.

DESCRIPTION:The Waites of Gloucester are modelled on the band of musicians run by the City of Gloucester in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Waites also perform locally in the Cotswolds under the name “Her Majestie’s Pleasure”. They enjoyed a long association with the Cotswold Early Music Festival\, playing regularly at their concerts and other events. They will bring a programme of seasonal music to close the Third Thursday series for 2021.

DESCRIPTION:‘Purcell and Friends’ brings together some gems of the late 17th century to present popular songs and tunes from Purcell’s theatre works alongside music by his continental contemporaries performed by Martin Perkins (organ)\, Henrik Persson ( gamba/cello) Lisete da Silva (baroque flute/recorders) and Nicola Wemyss (mezzo).\nThe original Musical and Amicable Society was founded in 1762 by James Kempson\, who directed the choir at St Bartholomew’s Chapel\, Birmingham. Together with fellow musicians from St Philip’s Church (now Birmingham Cathedral)\, Kempson and his singers gathered on a regular basis at Cooke’s tavern in the Cherry Orchard “for practice and recreation”!\nIn 2003\, Kate Fawcett and Martin Perkins decided to revive this historic society as a collective of professional period-instrument specialists\, performing in combinations ranging from small ensembles to full orchestra.\nIndividually\, the members maintain successful freelance careers with some of Europe’s most prestigious period-instrument ensembles. Collectively\, they explore Baroque and Classical repertoire\, both familiar and forgotten\, recreating the soundscape of an earlier era for a twenty-first century audience.

Possibly not a name you have come across\, and we are delighted to bring you this sumptuous music if it is your first introduction to the composer. Arensky specialised in composing chamber music and was devoted to the music of Tchaikovsky\, even using some of Tchaikovsky’s melodies in his own works. This Trio is a whirlwind of contrasting moods\, from the dramatic to the cheerful\, both memorable and uplifting and guaranteed to brighten your day!\nThey will also play some arrangements of pieces from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker.

DESCRIPTION:Two of the West Country’s finest fiddle-players join forces to form this fabulous duo with an innovative take on English traditional music and song.\nNick Wyke & Becki Driscoll are highly-respected musicians\, composers and workshop leaders based in North Devon. They first collaborated as a\nfiddle duo on a busking trip around Spain and Portugal\, and in the years since have worked with some of the leading lights of the English folk scene\,\nalways pushing the boundaries and developing new and inventive music. They will take us back to times when stories were told in music\, when tunes were used over and again in different times and places for dance and entertainment. \nC17th books of manuscript\, such as Playford’s Dancing Master have informed players through the years\, from the local band to musicians at court to today’s masters of tradition. Nick and Becki will tell tales in music and song\, adding their own contemporary twists that will surely contribute to the continued web of music that holds us all together. There is no music without the folk to make it!

SUMMARY:St John's Taunton - Lunchtime Concerts: Pipes and Reeds
DESCRIPTION:Live performances at Lunchtime will hopefully be resuming in June and are planned to continue until November with a performance on the second Friday of each month. It is also hoped that most concerts will be recorded\, so those who are unable to attend in person will be able to watch later on You Tube. \nKevin Hurst and Jonathan Delbridge join forces to provide a concert of music for clarinet and organ\, celebrating music from the baroque and classical periods. Programme to include Ave Maria by Bach/Gounod\, Air from Suite in D by J S Bach and a Church Sonata by Mozart. \nDoors will open at 12.00pm and the concert will start at 12.45pm. In accordance with Covid regulations\, it will necessary to book your seat by calling 01823 335543 and leaving name and contact number. It is regretted that it will not be possible to serve the usual cold drinks\, but people are welcome to bring their own refreshments. \nThere will be a retiring collection in aid of Somerset Community Foundation\, and St John’s Church for the maintenance of the Church
