DESCRIPTION:JanJoost van Elburg will direct choral music retrieved from the archives of the Monasterio de la Encarnacion and Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. This music has rarely been performed in recent times\, yet it represents a large body of work by musicians working throughout the 17th century and even later. They were influenced by the legacy of the great Tomas Luis de Victoria\, who had lived in Descalzas Reales for many years before his death in 1611. Praetorius\, Dering\, Scheidt\, Byrd\, Sweelinck\, Weelkes\, Cornelius\, Warlock\, Howells\, Poulenc\, Edmundson\, Mathias\, Bennett\, Will Todd & Ola Gjeilo \nOur New Year concert will be held on the day following the Feast of the Epiphany – that time of year which marks the visit of the Three Wise Men (or Magi\, or Kings) to honour the baby Jesus in the stable at Bethlehem. \nInstead of gifts of gold\, frankincense and myrrh\, we shall present a fascinatingly rich and varied programme of seasonal music\, stretching from the 16th & 17th centuries to the present day – with old favourites to be enjoyed and some exciting new and unfamiliar music to be discovered. \nMusic from these shores forms the core of the programme\, but music from France\, Germany\, Holland\, Italy\, Norway and Canada is also included\, thereby making the evening a truly international celebration. \nOne of our sopranos\, Helen Lunt\, will leave the ranks for one piece to perform with the choir on the ‘cello; and we are again joined by our regular virtuoso organist\, Richard Pearce. There will be several opportunities for the audience to join in with the singing\, too. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nCelebrate the festive season with Wellington Choral Society’s performance of J S Bach’s choral masterwork\, The Christmas Oratorio\, a wonderful exploration of the nativity which features some of Bach’s most spectacular orchestration. \nThe event takes place at 7-30 pm on Saturday November 26th at St John’s Church\, Wellington. Ticket prices are £12\, those under 18 free. Tickets are available on line at www.wellingtonchoralsociety.org.uk; from Nurtured by Nature\, South Street\, Wellington; Taunton Visitor Centre\, Market House\, Taunton; Wellington Community Offices; WCS members or on the Door. \nThe Christmas Oratorio was intended for performance in church during six separate days over the festive season. This choral masterpiece was written for the Christmas of 1734 and incorporates music from earlier compositions. It includes three cantatas written during 1733 and 1734 in praise of royalty or notable local figures. The orchestration demonstrates Bach’s most astonishing technical brilliance\, with glorious harmonies\, creating a magnificent rich sound. \nThe author of the original German text is unknown\, although a likely collaborator with Bach himself was Christian Friedrich Henri. The society will be singing Parts 1\,2\, 3 and 6 of the work in English\, using the translation and adaption by Reverend J. Troutbeck. \nConductor for the performance will be Wellington Choral Society’s Musical Director- Laurence Blyth. WCS and soloists accompanied by The Wellington Sinfonia. \n
